Amazon Users Group Western Visayas Bootcamp 2019

SilverOrbit together with Amazon AWS Users Group Western Visayas Meetup, conducted a bootcamp event which is
held at Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation in Bacolod City.

It was a great one day bootcamp and lucky to have with us, Amazon AWS Philippines Solution Architech, Roms Gapuz.

Audience was introduced to the basic of Amazon Web Services and some hands-on demo about storage, compute and network services
offered by AWS.

Morning session is discussion on how AWS and cloud computing works, on-demand and scalibility designs using cloud infrastructure.
Use case for business using traditional IT procurement versus cloud pay per use was presented.

On the afternoon we did the demo and some hands-on where we can test our create EC2 instances, S3 bucket as website, and samples of
auto-scaling configurations.

All in all it was a successful events, meeting new faces and getting new people work with cloud computing platform.

Last and not the least is the picture taking of the said event, which captures the moments  and knowledge we gained from this
bootcamp.

Running using Docker Compose is pretty straight forward once Docker is setup on the current machine.

But first make sure you have Docker and Docker Compose running. Currently  we are using:

And when you are up into a new project, for sure, there is a Docker image available for you to use, or probably you can build one too.

Scaling using ElasticBeanstalk: Migrating the API

SilverOrbit loves helping it’s partner on scaling the application using AWS technologies.

A mobile application that will cater gym goers. The problem is that running on a single server would not scale when users are getting many requests.  Planning the simple transition from VPS to AWS with  auto-scaling property is a way to do it.

Considerations:

  1. Time needed to rewrite the API codes and get to new infrastructure.
  2. Developer only need to do simple edit to the API codes.
  3. Simple Deploy with DEV and PROD environment

With these consideration, we decided to use Elastic Beanstalk to speed up migration and focus on the mobile app development than to the API coding.  Although micro-services can be considered here, using Lambda or API gateway. The micro-service and server-less can be good options for this too, probably for next improvement on this project.

Current Setup:

The API server for mobile app is on a single VPS together with the assets which includes images and static files.

Solution:

  1. Host static assets files to S3 and use Cloudfront as our CDN.
  2. The API codes will insert images on S3 buckets using IAM credentials too.
  3.  A separate RDS database to be used by API server for user profiles, and other information.
  4. CNAME the ElasticBeanstalk URL and Cloudfront
  5. ElasticBeanstalk easy configuration for Autoscaling features
  6. The image for the actual changes on the infrastructure.

 

By having this kind of setup we have great results:  scalable web servers  and assets files are serve via CDN. The transition works seamlessly in a short time.

Easily and Quickly Setup Kubernetes using LXD.

Running Kubernetes in 5 easy steps.

$ sudo snap install conjure-up --classic --edge
$ sudo snap install lxd
$ /snap/bin/lxd init
$ sudo usermod -a -G lxd $USER
$ conjure-up kubernetes

Now perform the forwarding so we can access the dashboard locally using the command on local machine:

And hitting our local browser on port 8001, we see the following Dashboard.

 

We can also try to ssh back to the host machine and execute a sample application.

It's fast and easy to get Kubernetes for any demo purposes.

Containerized Flask API using AWS Fargate and Mongo Atlas

Microservices: Building a containerized Flask API using AWS Fargate with MongoAtlas.

 

The project idea is to get a stream of data going into MongoDB from a separate app, in this case using a script to insert new records. Mongo Atlas provides a hosted mongodb, which was setup with VPC Peering with AWS in the same US East region.

 

On the API service side, setup ECS and create a Docker repository, i.e Using Flask-Resful and PyMongo to access the MongoDB. Uploading the API image to Docker repository using AWS CLI, seems good.

 

The API serves request from the mobile app and backoffice for reports and new updates. Mobile app post request to group results per week.

 

The Results

  • API is containerized using Docker and image were pushed to ECR.
  • Saves time in managing EC2 instances, Fargate handles them.
  • We did not need to manage MongoDB cluster as it is hosted on the same region, with read replica and secured with peering.

In the future, we will continue upgrading the setup, with more details and best practices in deploying this project.

Topics are about ServerLess and MicroServices.  Our speaker and invited guest is Donnie, AWS Technologies Evangelist.  We enjoyed short demo and tricks of new technologies offered by Amazon AWS.  Technical coding,idea, and demos of making use of microservices and serverless frameworks are very nice.
